Jigs & Fixtures

Jigs and fixtures are distinguished by the fact that a jig mounts onto a workpiece, whereas a fixture has the workpiece put on, within, or next to it. Occasionally, the names are used interchangeably.

The usage of jigs in manufacturing has been decreased due to the ongoing advancement of computerised design and control technologies like as CAD/CAM, CNC, PLC, and others, yet all computer driven machines require some type of clamping fixture for production runs. A drill jig is not required to guide the drill bits to the hole centres when the work is done on a CNC because it is Computer Numerically Controlled. Fixtures, on the other hand, are still required to keep the part(s) in place during the procedure. Jigs are currently required in a variety of industries, although primarily in low-volume production.
