Thrust Pad

Heel pain can occur at either of two places: the bottom of the heel or the back of the heel. The heel bone, the calcaneus, is the largest bone of the foot and bears our full weight during part of each stride. The painful heel, in almost all instances, is caused by excessive strain on one of the two major ligaments, and the pain occurs where these ligaments attach to the bone.
First, the Achilles tendon attaches at the back of the heel. This is the strongest tendon in the body and connects the muscles on the back of the calf to the heel. The force of contraction of the calf muscles enables us to stand on tiptoe and gives an extra thrust as we walk. Damage to this tendon attachment is called Achilles tendinitis. Frequently, there will also be tears in the tendon itself or in the lower part of the muscle.
Second, the heel spur syndrome affects the bottom of the heel. This is where the ligaments that make up the arch of the foot attach to the heel bone. These ligaments function like a bowstring to arch the foot, so they are under pressure every time we stand or step. If a problem at the bottom of the heel persists, calcium may develop in the inflamed area where the ligaments attach. The presence of the calcium spur may or may not cause additional pain. Many people have pain without visible spurs on X-ray, while others have spurs but no pain.

The seat on the left is the "extra wide" one. It was often referred to as the US seat. It was an accessory and cost an extra $25 in the mid 60s. Many bikes were delivered with it as stock, but the invoice added on the extra charge. More and more bikes came with the wide seat and by the late 60s, more than half seemed to be supplied with the wide seat.
It is the only /2 seat with grab handles, or vertical supports. The vertical supports are just a long bar going from the rear of the seat directly down to the bolt at the fender hinge. These vertical supports are necessary, as the side brackets are not strong enough to hold the seat. They are part of the seat and are not listed separately in the parts book.
The grab handles are of two varieties. The early ones were cast aluminum and the later ones were chromed steel. The aluminum polished up fairly well, but could corrode easily if left out in the weather. The chrome steel looked good until they started to rust. They were cheaper to make and looked cheaper too. Warning.Never allow a passenger to grab them for safety. In any sudden shift or take off, the passenger will be holding on too far back and fall off the rear of the motorcycle. Don't ask how I know that.

The bearing support in my opinion is the most important part of the hobbing process. The gear blank needs to be perfectly centered and set at the proper cutting height to produce an accurate worm gear. You also have to make sure that there is no flexing or movement of the gear blank while hobbing.
Since I plan on building more worm gears I decided to go to the extra effort to build a bearing support that I can use over and over without having to spend a ot of time setting up. Here's what I came up with and it works beautifully. I didn't include many measurements since every lathe is a little different.
Hopefully the pictures will give you some ideas.
