Epoxy Floor Coatings

Surface Preparation Prior to The Application of Epoxy Resin System

INTRODUCTION :

Proper surface preparation is the most important factor in the success of any Epoxy resinous flooring or coating application. Utmost care and consideration must be taken to ensure that all necessary steps in preparation are accomplished. The following guidelines have been complied as an aid to the applicator in the proper inspection and preparation of surfaces.

INSPECTION & PREPARATION PROCEDURES :

The application area should be inspected for adequate power supply, adequate heat and ventilation, accessibility and other consideration that are basic in planning a successful application.

SURFACE PREPARATION :

CONCRETE SURFACE :

1. Concrete surface should be freed from latencies and dust by sand blasting.
2. Thorough abrading with hard wire brush.
3. Chemical etching using 15% hydrochloric acid solution should be employed. The solution is applied by brush over the surface liberally and left in contact for     15 minutes. This is then washed off with plenty of water followed by drying with hot air.

For good adhesion , cleanliness, roughness and dryness of the surface are essential. Unless these are ensured by proper surface preparation a successful
    performance is not possible.

MILD STEEL SURFACE :

1. Thorough send blasting to ensure complete removal of rust particles.
2. Surface should be free from grease, oil or moisture.
3. Degreasing along with non-flammable solvents like trichloroethylene or carbon tetra chloride.
4. Hot air blast to remove traces of solvent or moisture.

QUARRY TILE, CERAMIC TILE & OTHER HARD FLOORS

The floor must be first carefully examined for soundness. In case of a tiled floor, each existing tile should be ‘ sounded ’ individually, to make certain that it is bonded firmly to its original substrate. Any loose or chipping tile should be removed. The Floor must be completely clean of Foreign material and should be thoroughly clean by washing with degreaser or strong detergent.

MOISTURE :

When applying Epoxy Resins to concrete slabs, the concrete should have moisture content less than 12%. It is the applicator’s responsibility to determine that the surface is free from moisture.

CHARACTERSTICS OF EPOXY RESIN FLOOR COATING SYSTEMS ARE :

    -     Dust proof and easy to clean
    -     Excellent mechanical strength
    -     Excellent chemical resistance there by protecting the base concrete
