This test method is used for the determination of the hydrolytic stability of petroleum or synthetic-base hydraulic fluids. The sample of 75 g of fluid plus 25 g of water and a copper test specimen are placed in a pressure-type beverage bottle. The bottle is rotated, end for end, for 48 hours in an oven at 93°C (200°F). Layers are separated and insoluble are weighed. Weight change of copper is measured. Viscosity and acid number changes of fluid and acidity of water layer are determined. These standards describe a test on properties preventing oxidation and corrosion of metals. The apparatus is eight place assembly for testing the oxidation characteristics of filtered middle distillate fuels. The test apparatus is also used for steam turbine oils, extreme pressure lubricating oils, inhibited steam-turbine oils, hydraulic oils, etc at elevated temperatures. Basically a 350 ml by volume of filtered middle distillate fuel is aged at 95°C (203°F) for 16 hours. The oxygen is bubbled through the sample at a rate of 3 Lit / hour. The sample is then cooled to room temperature and filtered to obtain the filterable insolubles. The sum of the filterable and adherent insolubles found after test is reported as total insolubles accordingly.
