EVAPORATION LOSS TEST APPARATUS FOR LUBRICATING OILS [NOACK TEST APPARATUS] :: ASTM D 5800 / CEC L 40 A 93

This test method covers three procedures for determining the evaporation loss of lubricating oils (particularly engine oils). Procedure A uses the Noack evaporative tester equipment; Procedure B uses the automated non-Woods metal Noack evaporative apparatus; and Procedure C uses Selby- Noack volatility test equipment. The test method relates to one set of operating conditions but may be readily adapted to other conditions when required. A measured quantity of sample is placed in an evaporation crucible or reaction flask that is then heated to 250°C with a constant flow of air drawn through it for 60 min. The loss in mass of the oil is determined.

MECHANICAL GREASE WORKERS WITH STANDARD GREASE UNIVERSAL PENETROMETERS APPARATUS :: ASTM D 217 / ASTM D 1403 / IP 50

These test methods covers measuring the consistency of lubricating greases by the penetration of a cone of specified dimensions, mass, and finish. The penetration is measured in tenths of a millimetre. The grease is worked for sixty double strokes or as per the requirement in the grease worker. The penetration is determined immediately after by releasing the cone assembly from the penetrometer and allowing the cone to drop freely into the grease for specified time.

DROP POINT APPARATUS FOR GREASE :: ASTM D 566

This test method covers the determination of the dropping point of lubricating grease. A sample of lubricating grease contained in a cup suspended in a test tube is heated in an oil bath at a prescribed rate. The temperature at which material falls from the hole in the bottom of the cup is averaged with the temperature of the oil bath and recorded as the dropping point of the grease.

DEMULSIBILITY CHARACTERISTICS TEST OF LUBRICATING OILS :: ASTM D 2711 & DIN 51353

This test provides a guide for determining the demulsibility characteristic of lubricating oils including highly viscous gear and bearing oils that are prone to water contamination and may encounter the turbulence of pumping and circulation capable of producing water-in-oil emulsions. The presence of moisture in oil can also deteriorate its properties as well as it can pose threat of rust on corrosion on various machinery parts. In this method sample of the oil and specified quantity of distilled water are stirred together for 5 minutes at standard temperature and allowed to settle. The percentage of water in the oil and the volumes of water and emulsion separating from the oil are measured and recorded.

The fuel oil to be tested is heated at 100OC in presence of Oxygen for 16 hours. The entire sample is filtered and the amount of sediment collected is weighed. DETERMINATION OF ROLL STABILITY OF LUBRICATING GREASES :: ASTM D 1831

The roll stability test is widely used in specifications. Test results are significant insofar as they can show a directional change in consistency that could occur in service. This test method covers determination of the changes in the consistency, as measured by cone penetration, of lubricating greases when worked in the roll stability test apparatus. The roll stability test operation provides the results according to the effect of squeezing grease between the rollers and the outer race of roller bearing as per the standard.

DETERMINATION OF WATER WASHOUT CHARACTERISTICS OF LUBRICATING GREASE :: ASTM D 1264

This test method covers the evaluation of the resistance of a lubricating grease to washout by water from a bearing, when tested at specific temperature under the standard laboratory conditions. The grease is packed into a ball bearing, the bearing is inserted in a housing and rotated at 600 +/- 30 rpm. Water is then impinged on the bearing housing at specified rate. The amount of grease washed out is calculated which is a measure of the resistance of the grease to water washout.

FILTERSBILITY TEST APPARATUS FOR ENGINE OILS :: ASTM D 6794 / ASTM D 6795 / GM 9099 P

The apparatus is used to determine the tendency of oil which forms precipitation that can plug an oil filter. The oil sample is first treated with deionized water and with dry ice if required. Then the treated sample is heated for specified time to 70OC. The sample is then cooled to room temperature and filtered. The filtration rate is then calculated which is used to determine filterability of the oil.
